Dectective Condon from the San Antonio Police Vehicle Theft Department presented a very informative briefing.  The following DO's and DON'Ts are the highlights of his briefing.

Above all he stressed was  using common sense, the harder you make it for thieves to steal your vehicle, the less likelyhood that your vehicle will be stolen.  Using theft deterance alarms, locking wheel nuts, etc. reduces the threat of someone stealing your vehicle.  

DO's:

    Take your keys,

    Lock your vehicle

    Park in a well-lit area

    If you park in an attended lot, only leave the valet key

    Close your car windows completely

    Park with your wheels turned toward the curb

    Check you rearview mirrorws before existing your vehicle

    Always be cautious of surrounding obstructions and natural barriers that may be concealing a car jacker

    Place a valuables in the trunk or out of sight

    If possible, park at the ground level to avoid using stairs or elevators

    Keep your vehicle insurance papers on your person, not in your vehicle

    Sign up for the Texas H.E.A.T. Program  (Help End Auto Theft) which allows the police to stop your vehicle during the hours of 1 A.M.     to 5 A. M. to stop the vehicle during these hours as it will be assumed the vehicle may be stolen.

DON' T

  Do not keep your vehicle registration in your car

  Do not leave or keep personal papers in your vehicle

  Never park in unattended or poorly lit parking lots

  Do not leave outgoing or incoming mail in your vehicle

  Never leave your house or vehicle keys inside the vehicle

  Do not park next to suspicious vans, trucks, or dumpsters

  Never hide a second set of keys in your vehicle
